Although all Quo albums have shown a slight change from one to another, On The Level displayed more of a jump in style not seen since Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon followed Spare Parts.

Although more poppy than it's predecessors on the Vertigo label it still had plenty to rock about. Another double header (Little Lady/Most Of The Time) opens the album followed the popular and bouncy I Saw The Light. The obligatory folksy track is served up by Over And Done. Side one is seen out with tremendous Nightride. Status Quo's only true UK number one single picks up again where Nightride left off. The story of a (reforming) alcoholic and jail bird is next with the interesting Broken Man. More of that familiar Quo sound is taken up again with What to Do followed by the gentle Where I Am. The album finishes off with a storming cover of a Chuck Berry classic Bye Bye Johnny.

Triple pick: Most Of The Time, Nightride & What To Do.
